Complaints and Health Impacts
Following months of alleged low-frequency noise pollution, residents near MARA Holdings’ 300-megawatt Bitcoin mining facility in Granbury, Texas, expressed widespread frustration and health concerns. Speaking in an interview video released Thursday by environmental advocacy group More Perfect Union, several long-term residents and retirees described their experience as “hell“. Approximately just under two miles separated the operation from their homes, with one elderly resident’s interview concluding with recurring headaches.
“It never goes away, headaches never go away,” the affected resident stated.
The continuous noise, described by Earthjustice attorney Mandy DeRoche as “a different type of noise pollution” characterized by its low frequency and incessant nature, has prompted legal action. A group of residents, some enduring the alleged disturbance for years, filed a lawsuit in October 2024 against MARA—then known as Marathon Digital. The suit alleged residents suffered adverse “sensory, emotional, psychological, and health impacts
“, including worsened pre-existing conditions.
Reports from More Perfect Union interviews further indicated that the noise was suspected to link to hospitalizations, chronic ailments, and potentially the death of an animal.
Corporate Background and Countermeasures
MARA’s Texas operation, located in an unincorporated Hood County region near Granbury, originated as a Compute North project initiated in 2022; Compute North subsequently filed for bankruptcy later that year. The company was assumed by MARA in January 2024.
Regarding current operations, MARA recently revealed plans to raise up to $1 billion via convertible senior notes, partly funded by buying Bitcoin.
Both MARA and Earthjustice were unreachable for comment at press time.
Political Context
The lawsuit’s timing coincides with narratives linking the crypto mining industry to political influence. Months prior, Texas mining executives reportedly met with then-presidential candidate Donald Trump, an encounter potentially strengthening his later advocacy for BTCmining.
Testing this connection, researcher Ingrid Taylor analyzed U.S. campaign finance data, finding MARA donated $10 millionquote to the President Trump 2024 Super PAC. However, she cautions democratic oversight remains inadequate for crypto operations.

As a Granbury resident articulated during an interview cited in a local CBS affiliate’s episode airing Wednesday: “[The operation] has got to come to an end. I’m not sure that it will…as far as that, whatever that we’ve got coming from the industry in Hillsborough is great, as long as it’s not here.I don’t have a problem with the industry. What I have a problem with is [what] it’s doing to people here. I think that’s being ignored.
The broader political landscape features a Republican-dominated Congress that has yet to pass specific crypto mining legislation, although considered actions towards stablecoins, central bank digital currencies, and market structure changes are underway. Earlier this year, President Trump signed an executive order establishing national stockpiles.
