San Antonio Spurs Announce Multi-Year Partnership with Crypto-Wallet Provider Ledger
The San Antonio Spurs, the NBA basketball franchise, has signed a multi-year sponsorship agreement with Ledger, a leading hardware cryptocurrency wallet manufacturer.
As part of the deal, the Spurs organization will feature a Ledger-branded patch on its team jerseys. Additionally, Ledger will actively participate in expanding the Spurs’ community engagement activities, particularly in France.
Ledger CEO Pascal Gauthier stated the agreement supports the company’s strategy to increase its presence in both the U.S. and its European home market. He emphasized the significance of aligning with a historically French-connected NBA team, noting the U.S. market is Ledger’s primary global focus and citing the team’s star center, Victor “Wemby” Wembanyama, as a French national.
Resurgence of Crypto Sports Sponsorships
Ledger’s deal with the Spurs represents a renewed wave of partnerships between professional sports entities and major cryptocurrency companies.
According to data firm SportQuake, crypto companies increased their spending on sports sponsorships during the 2024/25 season, with overall spending rising by 20% year-over-year to $565 million. Football accounted for over half of the new partnerships.
This uptick follows a period of contraction in late 2022 and early 2023, where numerous Web3 firm partnerships were terminated amid the fallout from the FTX collapse. Examples included FTX’s exits from partnerships with the NBA, Formula One, and Major League Baseball.
Data indicates that branded uniform partnerships, like the one between Ledger and the Spurs, remain a popular format for crypto companies, accounting for 37% of all current crypto sports partnerships according to SportQuake.
