Customers can pay using popular cryptocurrency wallets, with PayPal instantly converting transactions into its dollar-pegged stablecoin, PYUSD, or directly to USD, shielding merchants from price volatility.
“Our platform lets users link their wallet, pay with any token, convert it instantly to PYUSD, and deliver USD to merchants in seconds,” said Alex Chriss, President and CEO of PayPal.
The feature aims to simplify cross-border payments, reduce costs, and lower processing fees.
Promotional Fees
During a promotional period until July 31, 2026, transaction fees will be 0.99%. Post-promotion, the fee will rise to 1.5%, which remains competitive compared to standard credit card fees (up to 3.75%).
International Transaction Costs
PayPal claims it can reduce international transfer costs significantly compared to traditional credit cards, potentially by up to 90%.
Global Reach for SMBs
PayPal emphasizes the tool provides small and medium businesses easier access to a global customer base, enabling instant Bitcoin-like transactions that bypass traditional banking hurdles.
“Businesses of all sizes face incredible pressure when growing globally. Today, we’re removing these barriers and helping every business of every size achieve their goals.”
Example scenarios, such as a shopper in Guatemala buying a gift for a U.S. merchant, showcase the speed and fee reductions.
Market Context
The launch follows a period of increased stablecoin adoption and regulatory clarity in the U.S. financial technology sector.
Regulatory Environment
The signing of the GENIUS Act, providing a federal framework for stablecoins like PYUSD, has paved the way for this expansion into cryptocurrency payments.
PYUSD’s market capitalization has seen substantial growth this year, increasing from approximately $497 million to near $900 million.
