Gunzilla Games’ crypto-infused first-person shooter Off The Grid (OTG) is set for an imminent Steam release, eight months after launching as early access.
The title currently operates as a free-to-play game via Epic Games Store on PC as well as latest-generation Xbox and PlayStation platforms.
Although no precise Steam launch date has been confirmed, industry analysts suggest an upcoming release, with an approximate window of the last week of June. This projection comes from Delphi Ventures, whose firm invested in Gunzilla Games.
Data indicates solid performance on the Epic Games Store, where Off The Grid consistently appears on the “Most Played” list and maintains a 3.9/5 player rating.
Gunzilla CEO Vlad Korolev confirmed sustained engagement, reporting over 10,000 daily new players since launch.
However, analytics reveal limited mainstream appeal, with YouTube gameplay attracting significantly fewer concurrent viewers than industry giants like Counter-Strike 2 and Apex Legends. In the last month, Off The Grid achieved approximately 1,400 average concurrent Twitch viewers, positioning it as the 157th most-watched game.
Wallets Don’t Equal Players
The crypto gaming sector faces inherent challenges in distinguishing player participation from wallet activity. While substantial blockchain engagement exists, developer Gunzilla Games acknowledges the limitation of interpreting cryptocurrency wallet counts as accurate player metrics.
Nevertheless, wallet analytics indicate growing interest in the game’s Web3 elements. DappRadar records show the daily unique active wallets (UAW) engaging with Off The Grid‘s crypto functions has increased from ~40,000-170,000 in its first month to approximately 200,000 currently.
Prominent blockchain analytics firm Kevuru Games notes that the game’s testnet continues to dominate blockchain activity, suggesting players primarily utilize test networks rather than mainnet.
One Player’s Story
In an attempt to gauge mainstream retention, Gunzilla’s Web3 director Theodore Agranat highlighted research by a pseudonymous player testing 152 new accounts across four matches.
The analysis found 40% of new accounts considered “inactive” after three weeks, while over 48% remained active. The remainder were labeled “semi-active.”
Despite appearing promising, this single study’s methodology raises questions about account legitimacy and other variables.
Retention Expectations
Industry standards suggest Off The Grid‘s retention appears reasonable, but metrics vary by category:
- Software developer Barbary indicates 20% retention is favorable one week post-launch
- Solsten suggests rates of 5-10% after one month may be considered “strong”
Growing user acquisition costs have driven improved retention rates across the gaming industry. F2P shooters face particular pressure to maintain engagement.
The analysis suggests Gunzilla Games must carefully evaluate whether to pursue broader appeal or concentrate on the crypto enthusiast community.
