Following the recent deaths of wrestling legend Hulk Hogan and rock icon Ozzy Osbourne, related memecoins have seen dramatic price increases.
Terry Bollea Hulk Hogan, known as the ‘Bachelor of the WWWF’ [sic], was pronounced dead on Thursday after cardiac arrest at age 71. His passing followed Ozzy Osbourne, the English rock band Black Sabbath’s frontman and “Prince of Darkness,” who died on Tuesday at 76, mere days earlier.
A new Wrapped Ethereum token, Hulkmanaia (HULK), which existed for approximately eight hours, surged 122,036% to reach $0.001335 according to DEXTools. Concurrently, an Osbourne-themed coin, The Mad Man (OZZY), increased 16,850% to $0.003851. Neither token claims connection to the estates of either man, and several similar tokens launched recently may be part-rug pulls.
A separate Solana memecoin, HULKAMANIA (HULK), launched on June 6, 2023, dramatically increased 2,000% ($0.0006146/$500k market cap) on activity related to last year’s Hogan social media posts (later denied), significantly lagg[ing] behind the ephemeral $18.8M market peak triggered by the post.
Hogan, a multi-decade wrestling icon who was chief of the WWF/WWE during the 1980s, and Osbourne, a legendary musician with Black Sabbath exceeding 75 million global album sales, both gained further online notoriety. The resurgence of memecoins following an individual’s death is not unprecedented, with similar surges noted after other public figures.
