Waymo Autonomous Taxis Vandalized During LA Protest
Protesters against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids and National Guard deployment in Los Angeles have set several Waymo autonomous taxis ablaze.
- Multiple Waymo vehicles sustained damage as demonstrators climbed on top, smashed windows, and spray-painted the cars.
- Viral videos indicate at least five vehicles were severely damaged in Sunday’s downtown Los Angeles protest.
- Safety warnings highlight the potential for toxic fumes, including hydrogen fluoride, when lithium-ion batteries are damaged and burn.
The company temporarily removed vehicles from the immediate area following the incidents but remains operational in other parts of Los Angeles.
“Waymo is still operating in Los Angeles,” a spokesperson said. “However, out of an abundance of caution, given the recent activity, we removed vehicles from Downtown Los Angeles and will not be serving that specific area at the moment.” The company stated it is not currently aware of being the specific target of the attacks.
Waymo has indicated it is working with local authorities regarding the incidents.
⚠️ Traffic Advisory ⚠️ Burning lithium-ion batteries release toxic gases, including hydrogen fluoride, posing serious health and safety risks.
